Rising Stronger: Hagar Afghanistan's Earthquake Response

On October 7th, 2023, the earth beneath Herat, western Afghanistan, trembled as a magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck, bringing devastation to the region. This earthquake epicenter, located just two hours from Herat city, has reverberated across seven villages, leaving in its wake profound destruction. The death toll has risen to over 2300, with more than 10,000 injured.

While this earthquake represents a significant challenge, it isn't the first time Hagar has faced such a crisis. Our dedication to responding swiftly to those in need was demonstrated when the Paktika earthquake struck in June 2022. This commitment has been a constant in Hagar's mission, unwavering in the face of calamity.

One of Hagar Afghanistan's hallmark initiatives is the Restoring Lives through Livelihood (RLL) program. RLL stands as a beacon of hope for survivors of trafficking, slavery, and abuse. This program empowers survivors, particularly women, by providing them with training in valuable skills like sewing and tailoring. Beyond economic empowerment, the RLL program offers a sense of purpose and independence to survivors who have endured unimaginable hardships.

In the aftermath of the earthquake, the RLL program participants stepped up to showcase their resilience and compassion. Their response was not just swift; it was remarkable. They not only met the immediate clothing needs of those affected by the disaster, but they surpassed expectations. This act of solidarity and community support is a testament to the strength that can be found in adversity.

On October 20, 2023, the Hagar team distributed 600 high-quality blankets and 1800 pieces of clothing, thoughtfully crafted by RLL clients. This generous contribution has reached 300 families in the earthquake-affected Zinda Jan district of Herat province. The impact of this distribution extended beyond immediate relief; it conveyed a message of hope, resilience, and solidarity.

This story is a reminder that even in the face of adversity, there are stories of triumph, unity, and hope. The earthquakes may have shaken Afghanistan, but they couldn't break the spirit of its people. Through the dedication of these survivors-turned-entrepreneurs, Hagar Afghanistan has not only provided essential clothing but also instilled a sense of hope in the hearts of those affected. It's a beautiful reminder that, when empowered, survivors can become beacons of strength and compassion in their communities.
