Case Study: Lessons Imparted from Psychological Violence on Mental Well-being

Psychological violence involves the use of abusive, deceptive, threatening, offensive, embarrassing, and obscene language. This form of violence affects individuals from diverse backgrounds, regardless of wealth, education, or income. Domestic violence can have multiple contributing factors, such as traditional beliefs, alcohol consumption, low levels of education, and unemployment, all of which can lead to socio-economic hardship.

In one case, Mr. Thoeun Thai, a 57-year-old residing in Thnal Toteung village, Pram Mom commune, Thpong district, Kampong Speu province, used to engage in daily alcohol consumption, leading to aggressive and abusive behavior toward his wife and children. Despite warnings from local authorities about the harmful effects of alcohol, Mr. Thai's behavior remained unchanged.

In July 2022, Hagar's team collaborated with village and commune authorities to form a group aimed at promoting positive behaviors among community members. Surprisingly, Mr. Thoeun Thai was chosen as a model of a good husband due to his promise to change. He diligently attended training sessions and, over time, underwent a remarkable transformation, ceasing alcohol consumption and adopting more respectful and supportive behavior. His transformation has not only brought happiness to his family but has also positively impacted the community. Such transformations highlight the importance of education and community initiatives in addressing complex issues like alcohol abuse.

This case study underscores the widespread issue of alcohol abuse and its far-reaching effects on society, emphasizing the importance of community-based education and campaigns to raise awareness about the harms of excessive alcohol consumption and to promote healthier, safer communities.
