Hagar Australia welcomes Paul Flavel as Executive Director

We have exciting news!

Hagar Australia has appointed Paul Flavel to the role of Executive Director.

With decades of strategic leadership experience across the not-for-profit sector, fundraising, community engagement, and philanthropy, Paul has spent the last ten years as the Australian Program Director for Tearfund Australia.

During his tenure, Flavel saw staff engagement and satisfaction significantly increase, grew income levels well beyond budget, transformed the organisation to become digital first in just three years, and led the implementation and audience engagement of a number of highly successful global advocacy campaigns, including the ‘rubbish campaign’ which led to four of the world’s largest plastic polluters pledging commitments to reduce single use plastics.

In addition to his experience at Tearfund Australia, Paul has sat on the board of a number of advocacy coalitions including Micah Australia, was the founder of The Justice Conference in Australia, and the Director of The Global Justice Conference.

With extensive knowledge in advocating for change, growing and engaging partners and resources, diversifying growth, and building high-performing not-for-profit organisations, Paul is well positioned for the next season of Hagar’s growth and influence.

“Paul is an excellent appointment for Hagar Australia. We are impressed by his clear passion, purpose, energy and extensive experience within the sector, and his engaging commitment to Hagar Australia’s vision and mission. I look forward to Paul continuing the great progress we have made to date and towards our vision to see communities free and healed from the trauma of human trafficking, slavery and abuse.” – Hagar Australia Chair, Connie Ridley.

“For many years I have admired the excellent work of Hagar and consider it an immense privilege to take on the Executive Director role. Hagar’s holistic, trauma informed work is an important and distinctive approach within the sector and one that I am very proud to be associated with.  I look forward to growing the reach and impact of this important work so that many more lives can be transformed.” – Executive Director, Paul Flavel.

“With passions and a proven track record in challenging people to move beyond charity to engage with the systems of oppression that perpetuate injustice, Paul will drive the organisation in its mission and unique approach to aiding survivors by securing safe accommodation, providing access to counselling and case management, obtaining legal support, progressing their education, securing employment, and reintegrating into the community, along with the deep expertise of our board.”
– Hagar International CEO Andrew Catford
