Raksa's Story
Raksa*, a young woman facing overwhelming challenges, found herself in a dire situation. After her father's death, she became the sole provider for her family, as her mother was ill and the family was in debt. In 2020, a recruiter lured her into human trafficking by promising a high-paying job in China. However, Raksa was sold into a forced marriage and subjected to both sexual and manual labour.
Nearly a year later, she was rescued by the Khmer embassy and repatriated to Cambodia. In March 2023, she was referred to Hagar by the Ministry of Social Affairs, Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation (MoSVY) and an NGO. At that time, she was struggling with emotional instability and had lost hope for the future. Hagar provided her with essential support, including monthly food supplies, rent assistance, living and kitchen materials, health treatment services, and counselling. She also received vocational training in baking, supported by a former NGO.
With this support, Raksa has transformed her life. She is now stronger, capable of caring for her younger brother, and able to provide for their basic needs. She secured a job at a bakery, earning around 200 USD per month, along with additional allowances. The regular income from her job allows her to pay off her family's debt and ensure they have enough food.
Raksa expressed immense gratitude to Hagar for saving her life. “The Hagar staff always provided emotional support, empowering me to face challenges and build a secure future,” Raksa said.
